How Portable Storage Works on the Island
The island is private and gated, and the Kiawah Island Community Association manages gate access. Delivery trucks are commercial vehicles that need a pass to enter, so it helps to book with your address and delivery date ready.

Climate-Controlled Portable Storage and Temporary Storage Facility
Salt air and summer humidity are hard on upholstered furniture, art, electronics, and wood pieces. STOMO offers portable storage containers in Kiawah Island, SC with climate control options, so belongings that need a steady temperature can stay right at your home. Our temporary storage facility also has climate-controlled and standard space.
Portable Storage Units or Self Storage?
Portable storage keeps your belongings on site, so you load once, at your own door, with no trips to a facility. Self storage facilities serving the island are on Johns Island, so using one means loading a vehicle, driving off the island, and unloading again. Every trip back and forth also means leaving the island and returning through the gate.
The difference shows in how your belongings are handled. A move into self storage handles each item more than once, first into a vehicle and then into the unit. A container on your driveway handles each item once, which matters for furniture, art, and other pieces that scratch or chip easily.
Self storage
Requires loading a vehicle, leaving the island, and unloading again at a facility. You may need to handle your belongings again when moving them from the vehicle into the storage unit.
Portable storage at home
Keep belongings on site and load once at your own door. There is no need to make repeated trips to a storage facility or move your belongings into a separate unit.
When Kiawah Island Residents Need Portable Storage
Seasonal and Second-Home Storage
Many owners live on the island only part of the year. Furniture swaps, off-season clear-outs, and rental refreshes leave extra pieces with nowhere to go. On-site storage holds them until the next season, so nothing has to be carried off the island between guests.
Renovation and Rebuilds
Larger projects on the island can involve architectural review and long crew schedules, so work often runs for months. Keeping furniture and boxes in a container on your driveway clears the work area for the length of the job.
Moving and Downsizing
Owners trading a larger home for a villa or cottage often have more furniture than the new place can hold. With a container at your home, you have room to sort what comes along, what sells, and what gets donated, and it works for staging before a listing too. See real estate staging storage for the selling side.
Storm and Water Damage Recovery
After a hurricane, flooding, or wind damage, rooms often need to be emptied so drying and repairs can begin. Moving belongings into a container lets you keep the dry items together while the work is done.

Do I need approval before a container goes on my property?
Possibly. The island’s community association, the town, and many neighborhood and villa associations have their own rules for exterior items. Ask them before you book, and tell us if they need details such as the container size.
Are your containers weather resistant?
Yes. Every STOMO portable storage container is weather resistant. For belongings that need a steady temperature, ask about climate control.
How much space does the container need?
The 8×16 is 8 feet wide and 16 feet long, and the 8×20 is 8 feet wide and 20 feet long. Plan on a flat, clear spot at least that size.
Is there a time limit for keeping a portable storage container at my home?
STOMO offers month-to-month portable storage, so you can keep the container for as long as you need it without a long-term contract. However, Kiawah Island community or property rules may limit how long a container can remain on your property.
Can I choose between weather-resistant and climate-controlled storage?
STOMO offers weather-resistant portable storage containers and climate-controlled storage options. The best choice depends on what you plan to store and whether your belongings need temperature-controlled conditions.
